The shuttlecock takes flight as two historic institutions clash in the arena once more. Traditional rivals Royal College, Colombo, and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, gear up for the annual Royal-Thomian Badminton Encounter, competing for the prestigious Ranil Wijesekera Memorial Trophy at the Royal College Sports Complex.

Initiated in 2007, the inaugural encounter concluded in a victory for the Royal Team led by Captain I. Nimalachandra. In 2010, the challenge trophy was formally donated by Mr. and Mrs. A. R. L. Wijesekera in memory of their son, Ranil Wijesekera, a former Royal Badminton Captain who distinguished himself on the national circuit. Over the past two decades, the series has grown into a premier showcase of rapid footwork, tactical smashes, and school pride.

Both contingents enter this year's encounter aiming to establish control early across the ties:

Royal College: Entering on the heels of strong performances in recent editions, the Reid Avenue side looks to assert its depth across both singles and doubles events. With a balanced lineup, Royal will aim to set a high tempo early in the Senior U20 ties.

S. Thomas’ College: Seeking to swing the momentum back to Mount Lavinia, the Thomian squad brings a resilient, high energy side looking to capitalize on key tactical matchups. STC will be aiming to challenge Royal’s rhythm with disciplined defense and sharp counter play.

With action spanning across age categories (U13, U15, U17, and Senior U20) throughout the day, the encounter promises high intensity on every point as both sides compete for the ultimate honors.
