The court is set for another chapter in a rivalry built on tradition, pride and competition. Royal College, Colombo, and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, meet on 30 October 2026 for the annual Royal-Thomian Basketball Encounter, competing for the D. S. Senanayake Challenge Trophy.
First contested in 2003, the encounter bears the name of the Right Honourable D. S. Senanayake, the first Prime Minister of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and a distinguished Old Thomian. More than two decades later, the fixture continues to bring the two schools together through basketball.
Royal College’s own basketball history dates back to 1958. That longstanding connection to the game adds significance to an encounter in which each generation has the opportunity to contribute to its school’s sporting story.
The series has seen periods of dominance from both sides. S. Thomas’ won the first seven encounters, from 2003 to 2009, before Royal responded with five consecutive victories between 2010 and 2014. Those contrasting runs helped establish a contest in which history provides inspiration, while every new meeting presents a fresh challenge.
More recent results have continued that changing story. The Thomians won in 2023 and retained the trophy with a 66–49 victory in 2024. Royal responded in 2025, reclaiming the trophy at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.
That result sets the stage for this year’s meeting:
- Royal College enter as the defending champions, aiming to retain the trophy and build on their 2025 success.
- S. Thomas’ College will look to regain the trophy and add another victory to their strong record in the series.
The encounter has also provided a stage for younger players and former pupils. In 2024, the senior match was accompanied by Under-17, Under-15, Under-13 and Old Boys fixtures, reflecting the wider basketball community connected to the rivalry.
As the teams prepare to meet again, the focus returns to the court: every possession, every rebound and every opportunity to make a difference. With the trophy and school pride at stake, another spirited Royal-Thomian contest awaits.
